Due to its classification as a self-reactive substance (UN 3234, Class 4.1), AIBN is supplied in accordance with dangerous-goods packaging requirements, typically in sealed polyethylene-lined fiber drums or approved containers with specified maximum package quantities per shipment.
Important handling and transport note: AIBN is a thermally unstable, self-reactive solid with an onset decomposition temperature of approximately 65°C and a defined Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) significantly below that of ambient summer transport conditions in warm climates. It requires refrigerated storage (typically 2–8°C) and cold-chain transport, must be kept strictly away from heat sources, direct sunlight, open flame, and incompatible materials, and is shipped under Class 4.1 self-reactive substance dangerous-goods regulations. Its primary decomposition byproduct, tetramethylsuccinonitrile (TMSN), is acutely toxic — this must be communicated clearly in SDS documentation provided to the buyer. Storage, transport, and handling requirements will be confirmed at the time of quotation based on destination, climate, and shipment duration.
