Citronellol — CAS 106-22-9
Citronellol — CAS 106-22-9
Citronellol (CAS 106-22-9) is a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpenoid alcohol and a widely used aroma compound in fine fragrance, functional fragrance, and food flavoring. UAB An Group Export supplies it in food and fragrance grades, in both synthetic and natural-origin forms and enantiomeric options, matched to each customer's formulation and application requirements.
It is characterized by a fresh, sweet, rose-like floral aroma with soft citrus and green facets — gentler and more diffusive than geraniol, with greater tenacity and a softer overall profile. Citronellol occurs naturally at high concentrations in rose oil, geranium oil, and citronella oil, and is one of the primary contributors to the characteristic floral-rosy character of natural rose absolute and otto. Its broad regulatory approval, wide compatibility across fragrance families, and commercial importance in both fine fragrance and functional fragrance make it a core ingredient in the global flavor and fragrance industry.
For industrial buyers, supply is coordinated around grade, enantiomeric form, purity, volume, packaging, and delivery destination, in line with applicable product, food-safety, and cosmetic regulations. Bulk and commercial orders are both handled — send your requirements and we'll prepare a quote covering supply, packaging, logistics, and delivery.
Regulatory Notice
Citronellol is a listed fragrance allergen under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, requiring mandatory declaration on finished cosmetic product labels above 0.01% in leave-on products and 0.1% in rinse-off products. It is subject to IFRA usage restrictions across multiple product categories — oxidized citronellol produces hydroperoxides that are significantly more potent skin sensitizers than citronellol itself, and IFRA standards specifically address antioxidant stabilization and oxidation control for citronellol-containing formulations. IFRA conformity statements with category-specific usage levels are available on request. Buyers are responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable cosmetic, flavor, and fragrance regulations in their market and end-use application.
Key Applications
Fine Fragrance & PerfumeryA core floral ingredient in fine fragrance composition, contributing soft, fresh, sweet rose character across floral, chypre, rose soliflore, and oriental fragrance families. One of the primary aroma compounds of natural rose otto and absolute — widely used in natural-identical rose constructions and as a floral modifier across a broad range of fragrance structures. Subject to IFRA category limits.
Food & Beverage FlavoringFEMA GRAS listed (FEMA 2309) and permitted under EU flavoring regulations. Used as a flavoring ingredient in rose, citrus, and floral flavor compositions for beverages, confectionery, and food products.
Functional FragranceUsed in household and personal care product fragrancing including fabric care, skin care, hair care, and cleaning product formulations where soft, floral, and rose-like notes are required, subject to applicable IFRA category limits.
Personal Care & CosmeticsUsed as a fragrance ingredient across the full range of cosmetic and personal care formulations, subject to EU allergen declaration requirements and IFRA usage restrictions.
Aroma Chemical SynthesisUsed as a raw material and intermediate in the synthesis of citronellyl acetate, citronellyl formate, hydroxycitronellal, and other important aroma chemical derivatives and fragrance ingredients.
Insect Repellent FormulationsUsed as an active ingredient in select botanical insect repellent formulations — citronellol is a primary active component of citronella oil's repellent activity against mosquitoes and other insects.
Essential Oil ProcessingUsed as a standardization and blending ingredient in rose, geranium, and citronella essential oil processing and quality adjustment.
Citronellol vs. Geraniol — Understanding the Relationship
Citronellol and geraniol are structurally closely related monoterpenoid alcohols that frequently occur together in natural essential oils and are often evaluated side by side in fragrance formulation. Geraniol (CAS 106-24-1) has a brighter, more diffusive, fresher rose-citrus character with higher odor impact. Citronellol has a softer, sweeter, more rounded floral rose profile with greater tenacity and lower odor threshold — preferred where a gentler, more lasting rose character is required rather than geraniol's more immediate freshness. The two are frequently used in combination in rose-type fragrance constructions to balance impact and tenacity. If you are evaluating both, include your formulation brief and target rose profile in your quotation request and we will advise on grade selection and combination ratios.
Enantiomers and Natural Origin
Citronellol exists as two enantiomers with subtly different aroma profiles: (R)-(-)-citronellol (rose-type, dominant in rose and geranium oils) has a softer, more floral, true-to-rose character; (S)-(+)-citronellol (citronella-type, dominant in citronella oil) has a slightly fresher, more citrus-herbal profile. Most commercial synthetic citronellol is supplied as a racemic mixture. Natural-origin citronellol recovered from rose, geranium, or citronella oil carries natural flavor and fragrance designation and commands a significant price premium. If your formulation requires a specific enantiomer, enantiomeric enrichment, or natural-origin documentation, specify this in your quotation request.
Supply & Packaging
Supplied according to your required grade (food or fragrance), origin (synthetic or natural), enantiomeric form, purity, quantity, packaging, and destination. Citronellol is a colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid at room temperature with a fresh, sweet, rosy odor. As a terpene alcohol subject to oxidative degradation, it should be stored in sealed, inert containers under nitrogen or argon blanket where possible, away from heat, light, and oxygen exposure — same storage protocol as linalool and geraniol. Depending on the order, options include drums or bulk shipment. Bulk quantities are available on request.
Product Documentation
Available on request, depending on the specific product and supply arrangement:

Compliance statement:
"Due to the regulated nature of this product in cosmetic applications, orders are subject to business registration verification. Buyers are responsible for verifying that the intended end use and market application comply with all applicable IFRA standards, EU Cosmetics Regulation allergen declaration requirements, and other regulations in their jurisdiction. UAB An Group Export reserves the right to request additional end-use declarations or supporting documentation and to decline any order where end use, destination, or buyer information cannot be adequately confirmed."
