Natural vs. Synthetic Eugenol
Natural-origin eugenol is typically recovered by steam distillation and isolation from clove bud oil, clove leaf oil, or cinnamon leaf oil — clove leaf oil is the primary commercial source, typically containing 80–95% eugenol. Natural-origin material qualifies for natural flavor and natural fragrance designation and commands a price premium, though less dramatic than for rose-type terpene alcohols given the relative abundance of clove-source material. Synthetic eugenol is produced from guaiacol and allyl chloride and is chemically identical to naturally occurring eugenol — the standard grade for price-sensitive applications where natural designation is not required. If your application requires natural-origin documentation or natural flavor/fragrance designation, specify this in your quotation request.

Eugenol is a colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid at room temperature with a powerful, warm, clove-like odor — packaging and handling should account for its high odor intensity and its sensitivity to oxidation and discoloration on prolonged air exposure.
