It is subject to IFRA usage restrictions across multiple product categories — oxidized geraniol produces hydroperoxides that are significantly more potent skin sensitizers than geraniol itself, and IFRA standards specifically address antioxidant stabilization and oxidation control for geraniol-containing formulations. Geraniol vs. Nerol — Understanding the Geometric Isomers
Geraniol and nerol (CAS 106-25-2) are geometric isomers — geraniol is the trans (E) form, nerol is the cis (Z) form — with subtly different aroma profiles. Geraniol has a brighter, fresher, more diffusive rose character; nerol has a softer, slightly sweeter, more delicate floral profile. Both occur naturally in rose and geranium oils. In commercial practice, geraniol is the dominant isomer and the standard commercial grade — nerol is used where its softer character is specifically required or where the natural isomer ratio of an essential oil is being replicated. If your formulation requires nerol specifically or a defined geraniol/nerol ratio, specify this in your quotation request.
Natural vs. Synthetic Geraniol
Synthetic geraniol is the standard commercial grade for most fragrance and flavor applications — consistent quality, competitive pricing, and chemically identical to naturally occurring geraniol. Natural-origin geraniol, recovered from palmarosa, rose, or geranium oils, qualifies for natural flavor and natural fragrance designation and commands a significant price premium. Natural palmarosa oil is the primary commercial source of natural-origin geraniol due to its high geraniol content (typically 75–90%). If your application requires natural designation or natural-origin documentation, specify this in your quotation request.
Supply & Packaging
Supplied according to your required grade (food or fragrance), origin (synthetic or natural), purity, quantity, packaging, and destination. Geraniol is a colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid at room temperature with a fresh, sweet rose odor. As a terpene alcohol subject to oxidative degradation, it should be stored in sealed, inert containers under nitrogen or argon blanket where possible, away from heat, light, and oxygen exposure — same storage requirements as linalool apply. Depending on the order, options include drums or bulk shipment. Bulk quantities are available on request.
