Eugenol vs. Isoeugenol — Understanding the Difference
Eugenol (CAS 97-53-0) and isoeugenol are structural isomers — isoeugenol is produced by base-catalyzed isomerization of eugenol, shifting the allyl side chain to the propenyl position. Aromatically, eugenol has a sharper, more medicinal clove character; isoeugenol has a softer, more floral, carnation-like quality with greater tenacity. Commercially, eugenol has broader application across food, fragrance, dental, and pharmaceutical sectors with less restrictive IFRA limits — isoeugenol is more specifically positioned as a fine fragrance ingredient and synthesis intermediate, with significantly tighter cosmetic-use restrictions that limit its versatility relative to eugenol. Isomers — Trans and Cis
Isoeugenol exists as two geometric isomers: trans-isoeugenol (the dominant commercial form, with the stronger, more characteristic spicy-floral aroma) and cis-isoeugenol (softer, less intense, present in smaller quantities in commercial material). Commercial isoeugenol is predominantly the trans isomer. If your application requires a specific isomer ratio or trans-isomer minimum specification, include this in your quotation request.
