m-Phenylenediamine — CAS 108-45-2
m-Phenylenediamine — CAS 108-45-2
m-Phenylenediamine (MPD, CAS 108-45-2) is a primary aromatic diamine and a core raw material across epoxy resin curing, meta-aramid fiber manufacturing, dye production, and specialty chemical synthesis. UAB An Group Export supplies it in technical and industrial grades, matched to each customer's process and application requirements.
It is used primarily as an epoxy hardener and curing agent in industrial coating, adhesive, and composite applications, and as a monomer in the production of meta-aramid fibers and polyamide-based materials. Its meta-substituted bifunctional amine structure gives it distinct reactivity and performance characteristics compared to the ortho and para isomers, making it the preferred phenylenediamine grade for epoxy curing and meta-aramid applications where the geometric arrangement of the amine groups is critical to the polymer's thermal and mechanical properties.
For qualified industrial buyers, supply is coordinated around grade, purity, volume, packaging, and delivery destination, in line with applicable product and handling regulations. Bulk and commercial orders are both handled — send your requirements and we'll prepare a quote covering supply, packaging, logistics, and delivery.
Isomer Distinction — OPD, MPD, and PPD
m-Phenylenediamine (MPD, CAS 108-45-2) is the meta isomer of phenylenediamine — distinct from o-phenylenediamine (OPD, CAS 95-54-5) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD, CAS 106-50-3) in both structure and application. The three isomers share a molecular formula but have completely different chemical reactivities, polymer geometries, and commercial applications. OPD is used primarily in benzimidazole and quinoxaline heterocyclic synthesis. MPD is used primarily in epoxy curing and meta-aramid fiber production. PPD is used primarily in oxidative hair dye formulation and para-aramid fiber production. Receiving the wrong isomer results in synthesis failure or incorrect polymer geometry — isomer specification must be confirmed explicitly at the time of quotation. Melting point data on the CoA (MPD approximately 63–66°C) is the primary identity confirmation parameter distinguishing MPD from OPD and PPD.
Key Applications
Epoxy Resin Curing & Hardener SystemsA widely used aromatic amine hardener for epoxy resin systems in industrial coatings, adhesives, composites, and electrical laminates. MPD-cured epoxy systems offer good chemical resistance, elevated temperature performance, and mechanical strength — valued in demanding industrial and aerospace coating and composite applications.
Meta-Aramid Fiber ManufacturingA primary monomer in the production of meta-aramid fibers (including Nomex-type materials) via condensation polymerization with isophthaloyl chloride — meta-aramid fibers are used in flame-resistant protective apparel, filtration, and electrical insulation applications where thermal stability is critical.
Dye & Pigment ManufacturingUsed as a coupling component and intermediate in the synthesis of azo dyes, acid dyes, and specialty colorants for textile and industrial applications.
Polyamide & Specialty Polymer ChemistryUsed in the synthesis of polyamides, polyimides, and other high-performance polymer systems requiring meta-substituted aromatic diamine monomers for specific thermal and mechanical property profiles.
Pharmaceutical & Agrochemical IntermediatesUsed as a building block in the synthesis of select pharmaceutical active ingredients and agrochemical intermediates requiring a meta-phenylenediamine scaffold.
Specialty Chemical SynthesisUsed across a range of specialty chemical synthesis applications requiring a bifunctional meta-substituted aromatic amine starting material.
Supply & Packaging
Supplied according to your required grade and purity, quantity, packaging, and destination. m-Phenylenediamine is a white to light tan crystalline solid at room temperature with a melting point of approximately 63–66°C — it darkens on exposure to air, light, and moisture due to oxidative degradation, characteristic of primary aromatic diamines. Color specification and melting point data should be included in CoA requirements. Note that MPD's relatively low melting point means it can soften or cake in warm storage conditions — confirm storage temperature capability at the buyer's facility, particularly for tropical or summer-hot destinations.
As a toxic solid and primary aromatic amine, packaging, transport, and handling are arranged according to applicable dangerous-goods requirements, typically in sealed, moisture-proof drums or bags with appropriate hazmat labeling and documentation. Storage must be in sealed, inert containers under nitrogen blanket where possible, away from heat, light, moisture, and oxidizing agents. Skin contact must be avoided — appropriate PPE including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection is mandatory during all handling operations.
