TEC vs. TBC — Which Citrate Plasticizer Do You Need?
Triethyl citrate (TEC) is preferred in pharmaceutical film coating, food-contact applications, and personal care formulations where regulatory approval (E1505, USP/BP/EP) and low molecular weight are priorities. Tributyl citrate (TBC) is preferred where lower volatility, higher permanence, and better plasticizing efficiency in PVC and polymer systems are required — particularly in applications where TEC's higher vapor pressure causes unacceptable migration or loss over time.
